Fly Fishing The Bow River
The River :
The Bow River originates high in the Canadian Rockies near the
resort town of Banff. From here it flows to the city of Calgary
and on to the Carseland Weir, the most productive and famous
stretch of the river consisting of approximately 50 miles of
water. Your guides will use drift boats to float the many
different sections of the river providing you with opportunities
to fish from the boat and wade fish the most productive areas.
The river below Calgary flows through rolling hills and groves
of trees offering nice western scenery as you fish along. This
stretch offers varied conditions from long fast runs and gravel
bars to slow pools and back channels perfect for sight fishing to
a cruising trout.
The Bow River is a food factory, resulting in healthy quick
growing trout that rival the many famous rivers of the American
West. An average count of 2300 fish per mile means more food
for each fish making the Bow a great destination to catch a trout
of a lifetime.
The Fishing :
The Bow River offers the visiting angler high quality fishing for
some of the biggest most challenging trout in the world. The
river boasts a self sustaining population of trout that average 20
inches with fish in the 21 to 28 inch range a common occurrence
on a fishing trip. The Bow is also one of the best places in the
world to catch trout of this size on dry flies through out the
fishing season.
What To Expect :
Each morning your guide will meet and pick you up at your
hotel, you will then be taken to one of the local fly fishing shops
to ensure you have the most up to date flies for the time of year.
Your guide will choose one of the many floats on the river based
on your desires and river conditions, depending on what section
of river you will be fishing that day you may have a 10 to 45min
drive to the put in. Most fishing days will begin around 9am
and conclude s between 7pm and dark, after fishing you will be
returned to your hotel to prepare for the next day.
Seasons and Hatches :
With spring runoff usually starting in June the prime water
conditions for fishing occur in July, August and September.
With falling water and more visibility in July fish move well to
streamers and nymphs, later in the month golden stone flies
hatch giving anglers good dry fly fishing. Hatches of caddis and
pmd's occur around the first of August and also begins the start
of hopper fishing. Hoppers will continue into September along
with hatches of baetis and tricos.
At any time during the fishing season the weather can change
quickly, anglers should always be prepared with fleece and rain
gear.
